Does anyone know how you can tell the org engine that was in a shell. No engine or trans is with the frame and I'm trying to figure out what engine came with it. Vin# doesn't appear to be of any use and all lit that I've read said that the information I'm looking for would be only on the block. ?? Is that correct? Any info would be nice. Thanks.
There are also some cosmetic stylings that are not definitive proof, because they are easy to change, and not of use if they are not there.
6 cylinder: holes in rear lower front fenders. 3 emblem holes on flat hood. Engine mounts for a 6 are different than an 8.
V-8 except 400: flat hood with 2 emblem holes, no holes in lower rear fenders.
400: Hood with twin bulges, grilles with additional chrome trim bars along centerline, 400 emblems on hood and deck lid, arrowhead badge on front bumper.
Again, as these items are readily changed, they are not definitive.

you wrote: V-8 except 400: flat hood with 2 emblem holes, no holes in lower rear fenders.
Are you saying that a flat hood with two emblem holes is more than likely a 350.
yes, unless someone put a flat hood on a 400, unlikely though
also, do you have the front bumper? if a 400 (of course bumper COULD be changed too..) there will be a pontiac arrowhead mounted on the center or two holes there..
