My buddy gave me the shifter that came out of his 68 GTO, it is a dual gate "his and her" factory shifter. It looks like it will fit my 68 console, anybody got any tips on whether it will work and any mods that have to be made. Thanks Jeff
Here Bob Trump outlines just how he did his cover etc... I must say it one of the best DG installs I've seen to date. Very factory looking. Not a lot of tech details, but it should give you some ideas.
The 68 Firebird shifters could act much like these in the way they would down shift one gear at a time. But the look of the Dual Gate or His & Her's as they were called almost made them as desirable as a 4 speed sitting there...
My car has that. It's not really dual gate. When you push the shifter to the right and forward it goes forward only 1 gear. Pushing straight forward it will go all the way to neutral without hitting a stop. Mine hangs up a little on the 2-3 shift but it's a cool factory shifter.
The Hurst dual gate actually had a separate gate for manual shifting.
Exactly, 68 and 69 at least... 67's used a completely different set up... and Pontiac's shifters were completely different from the Corporate counterparts.
Most don't know about the "slap Stick" function of the 68/69 shifters. Old's had some interesting shifters too... obviously with such a close relationship with Hurst.
So Jeff, have you decided to give it a try? Or? Keep us posted!
Brett! (Our Passat has a similar set up, Tiptronic, Manual AT tranny) What goes around comes around...

Your right. I compared the 69 to the one in my 68 GTO last night. They work differently.
