Just to prove that a blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then, I wanted to share a picture of the gas cap I found. I just happened to stumble upon it and hope that I did not outbid anyone from here! I didn't think I would ever find one. (And I was told that I never would so I feel pretty lucky.) See the F and E stamped on the cap? Below is a thread where Jim posted a picture of his original gas cap from his 68 Firebird, and it has the F and E. Also, in another thread on PY, Scrumpy posts a picture of his, and it also has the F and E. http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/showthread.php?t=457650&highlight=gas+capAre you serious or trying to pull my leg.................?LOL

So does that stand for 'full' and 'empty' ?

So does that stand for 'full' and 'empty' ? Good guess--It stands for Fuller Emerson who must have made these caps. The guy on e-bay only had it advertised as a Firebird cap in the body of the listing and not in the description so I believe most people missed this. I was just lucky to see it and recognize it.

I will have to look at mine tonight. I am 99% sure mine is original, but I never noticed the F and E before.

Original gas caps and valve cover oil filler caps are hard to find. I am just lucky that I have the oil filler cap and my Judge has the originals of both.
They are apparently not reproduced and these things seem to change from year to year or even during the production year.

Nope, not a pessimist. Must be thinking of some other good looking guy with a great personality and a penchant for the finer things in life.

That's suitable for a '69, with the gas cap behind the license plate. The tabs get in the way of the tube recess.

Don't believe everything you read. He lists many applications for that one cap, and the gas caps changed fairly often. I know that most all 1969 GTO's/LeMans used a round cap with no tabs and a round indention in the middle--not similar to this cap. This cap may just be a later replacement--no telling. The only way to know what a correct cap looks like is to see an original car or have an old parts book and match the part number to an NOS unit in the box. (Or Banshee will help.........lol) Gas caps were lost thru the years at gas stations and many NOS caps are rare. I have seen only one NOS 1969 GTO cap for sale, and I've had my Judge since 1979.

I always thought this was the correct cap, with the raised lettering vs. the stamped. It is identical to the one that is on mine.

I'm not sure if this cap was also used in 68. Maybe someone else will help.

The one betwinner just landed matches what I have seen as the original cap. That's not saying that they didn't use multiple types like that have on many '68 parts. That single ear vented cap matches mine, a perfect 400 point POCI gold award '68 RA here in the Chicago area, and the picture in the '68 Sales Manual that Geoff has on this site: http://www.oakmediacreations.com/firebird/1968/sales_manual/Q-9.html

I am pretty sure my '68 matches the one cat shows. But I will look tonight to be sure.

Betwinner's score matches my 67's cap. I bet GM sourced gas caps from a few manufactures or may have change sometime in 68?

Mines leaks pretty good on hard accel. Until I put cardboard behind the rubber seal. I think that will work just fine. Thanks 68tpls400

I just looked, and mine is an exact match to the one in cat's picture.
My '68 is a second week of Sep't '67 build for what that may matter.
