Hi all, i have had my 69 project for over 4 years now. The tranny always slipped and lately it leaks. I picked up a BOP 350. As i plan my swap out this year.. i am worried the upper bell housing bolts are impossible w/o engine pull.. it just seems so tight by the firewall. Can the engine be tilted back for access to these bolts?
It's not impossible. Jack the car up high and work from underneath. I used a 3/8" drive ratched, a couple of long extensions, a universal joint and a socket.
When I did mine, I took off the crossmember and supported the tranny. Then with someone watching topside as to not hit the distributor, I tilted back of the tranny down and got the bolts with 3, 1 ft. extentions and a socket.
I prefer to use a long version of a standard box end/open end wrench from up top. It's not too bad, really. Raising tranny would expose the bolts, then you can loosen & remove them, then remove the middle & bottom ones. Then once you have new tranny against the block put middle & bottom ones in, raise tranny again, then install top bolts. From there it's all downhill!
