i have a question to ask. about 2 years ago i bought a disc brake rearend that the guy claimed came off a late 80's camaro that i tought would fit in the 85 monte carlo ss i had. heres the question. will the rearend from a late 80's camaro or firebird fit in the fist gen firebirds? i have a 68 that i plan on putting it in if it fits. anybody know?
The backing plates might bolt on without any modifications, meaning you wouldn't have to swap rear ends ... just the brake set up. Rear discs on an otherwise stock 68 rear end. Of course, there are a bunch of other things to change: Master cylinder, proportioning valve, etc.
I don't know about a complete swap. Though I would guess that it's the weaker 7.5" rear end, instead of the more preferred 8.5"
you can make it fit. it has smaller axle tubes, is a slightly different width, and only has a 7 1/2" or 7 5/8" ring gear.
you could weld spring perches on, and get a big/little u-joint or cheby driveshaft, and possibly some other mods, and make it work, but there are better, stronger ones to pick from.
a 7 5/8 gear is okay for a 250-300hp engine which doesnt hook up IMO. if it hooks up, it will grenade before too long.
