Im going to replace the rear leaf springs because the car seems to sap 1/2 lower in the right rear corner. I put new coil springs in it and replaced the air shocks with factory shocks. Now the car is on all four wheels again and the right rear wheel well is 1/2 lower than the left one. My question is whats the differance in the four leaf compaired to the five leaf? I have five leaf. Why is the four leaf $209. and the five leaf $139. for the set in the Ames catalog. On ebay thier is a new set for $70.00 and $77.00. Or do I get them recurved? Witch do I go with? I like the look of the rear lower than the front. I guess thats the factory look? Thanks Joe http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33584&item=2469148466
the five leaf are a more universal spring for people who just want new springs, so there are stockpiles of them, and they're cheap. the only people who want the four leaf are people who might notice that their car came with it, and want it to stay original. the 5 leafs fit all F bodies and X bodies of that era. the 4 leafs were more specific.
the five leaf will put you above stock height. yes the rear was a little lower from the factory. i dont know if the 4 leaf sits right or not. if they are not rusty you can get them rearched.
check all your bushings too. subframe and all. they can make it sit crooked too. mine sits low on the right rear too. i used to think it was from body twist from hard acceleration, but i'm leaning towards blaming that yellow LF fender that was on my green car when i bought it. it used to lean real bad before i did springs and bushings. now it is barely noticeable.
Scott, I replaced everything on the front end. I mean every bushing, ball joint, coil spring, I mean everything. I never noticed the r/r sag before I tore into it.I put a level on the front end frame and it right on the money. It got to be in the leaf springs. They look great. Is it ok to remove them and have them re-arched. Has anyone done that? Whats the cost compared to new ones? Thanks Joe
Hey joe, I just replaced the rear springs on mine and prior to that my right rear was also sagging a little lower than the left. Come to find out when I removed the right spring, two of the leafs were broken You may wanna check yours out for breakage...the only way I found out mine was snapped is when I removed the spring, the leafs were broken right where they sit in the saddle.
I ended up going with the 5 leafs on mine and was pleased with the ride height. Here is a pic of the results
if one corner in the rear is sagging , it can be because several things ,not all just rear end related.. it can be that one of the front coils is for instance not totally in the groove its supposed to be in...makes it 'taller' , and result is the rear corner on the diagonal will be pushed down = looks like sagging, ( did you make sure the coil got in correctly?) also the subframe could be bent , same result , diagonally it gets pushed down if frame is bent up, or vice versa..
if frame bent, you can use coil spring adjusters ( too types , one that twists in to raise or another type that can raise or clamp dn, you`d want the latter)to clamp down the side thats too tall up front...to get car even , not a perfect solution ,but a solution..
other suggestions were ,broken leaf, bad bushing etc, if the springs are good , you can get them re-arched(did that on another car), you can also add a leaf into the exist set , very inexpensive(I did that to lift the rear on my 57 Stude 1")
on my bird I bought a new set , got the 'original' style 4 leaf...5 leaf is cheaper ,but somewhat stiffer....depending on how you want the ride to be, softer ,more orig.= 4 leaf , stiffer ,more 'racy' = 5 leaf
may want to check the front....even though sag is in the rear...
I just replaced my 4 spring leafs with 5 leaf, Like it alot. I checked on getting my 4 leafers rearched and it would have been about 200.00 from a place that only does springs and leafs. Figured i'd go with new from their sources and when they came they had a made in Mexico sticker on them. Ripped that off and I'm satisfied.
I installed the hotchkiss leafs on my 69 and was very impressed with the product quality and ride height. They are designed for use with multi-leaf perches. Can send photos if U R interested. I also installed the Hotchkiss front coils.
