i have a 1969 convertible a/c car, my heater core is leaking and blower motor i believe to be bad. i have replacement parts for both just need some advice on how to get to these items. its given me nothing but a headache thus far, any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks, nathan
I just replaced the heater core in my car. I removed the glove box first. There are three or four nuts you have to loosen under the hood against the firewall, disconnet hoses of course. After that, I was able to maneuver the housing under the dash where the heater core is located loose...just enough to get that nasty core out thru the glove box opening. Then reverse the process. You may have to bend the heater core copper tubing slightly to make it fit back in...I did anyway.
AS for the blower motor, I read somewhere that you have to take the right fender off to get to it. The motor is under the hood against the firewall. If you don't want to do it now you could always do it later as it doesn't affect the heater core...on mine it doesn't anwyay.
Nathan, If you run a search, there is excellent advice on how to do this. You will even find pictures posted showing where the nuts are located. I replaced mine last fall and although it was a pita, it's very doable. I printed off the threads I'd searched here and followed them to the letter. Good luck. Trevor
It's true. The right side fender apron blocks any access to the heater blower motor. It can only be removed once you have access to all the screws under there, and you need clearance to get the motor out. I removed the fender apron with the fender on the car, but i don't recommend it. Take your fender off.
The heater core is mounted from inside the car as popptj said above. There are studs in the housing that pass through the firewall and nuts on the engine compartment side of the firewall holding it in.
Did you do it with an A/C car? The thread depicts a non-A/C car. The evaporator box takes up all the room you would need to get the heater blower out. I thought I tried everything before removing my fender apron. I pulled the bottom of my fender away from the car to get that out without removing the fender, which wasn't a grea idea. My left front fender doesn't quite fit the same.
I have a NON-A/C car. And the thread is about an A/C car right..? Might be different, true.. But i replaced only the heater radiator (core), not the blower motor, that's true, sorry; for the blower motor I'm not sure, you might need to remove the fender for that..
Sorry for the confusion!
The thread I linked to does contain a lot of pics though, I always like that before I start...
