I have the 69 firebird with Th400 and console shifter. The neutral safety switch is located at the steering column near the dash. Shouldn´t it be beside the shifter in the console? Where is the right location? Neutral safety and back-up lights doesen´t work? Please help me?
the NSS on the column is correct. it is because of the steering wheel lock. the console shift is connected to the column. you can watch the column turn when you shift out of park. i think this is just for automatics.
First check to make sure you have the linkage going from the tranny to the firewall/steering column. If you change gears on the console and the column inside doesn't spin then you may be missing this linkage. If this is the case, check the parts for sale section and contact Terry Ritter, he can help you.
If the linkage is there and hooked up but the NSS doesn't engage then try using your hand to twist the column as far as it will go counter-clockwise and see if it will start; if it does then your linkage just needs to be adjusted to twist the column more.
After you've played with it a little more just let us know what the results are and we'll go from there.
there is no linkage from the tranny to the steering column in my firebird. I had the engine and the tranny out of the car and there was no linkage. do you have a part number or something in a catalog of npd, classic idustries or a picture where it is showed?
The linkage is made up of 4 pieces. 1) Shift lever on side of trans, 2) A rod going from the shift lever to a 3)pivot bolted the the frame rail just at the base of the firewall. 4) There is a rod going from the pivot to the lever on the steering column inside the engine compartment.
I have everything you need to connect the transmission to the steering column if you want it. I installed an aftermarket shifter and it did away with the linkage and I bypassed the factory neutral safety and reverse light switch and wired in the ones on the aftermarket shifter.
Sportsman, The linkage is standard and you need it if you want originality.
Sounds like Drew can help you out and so can Terry Ritter. I've never specifically looked for this linkage in a catalog but I've been through all of the catalogs page by page and I don't recall seeing it either.
It would be cheaper through one of these guys anyway.
that picture does show it by the shifter. that's odd. i thought that was just MT cars. oh well, maybe they had it both ways? i would go by what your car and others have, rather than by that book, unless one or the other can be proved wrong.
Definitely on the column. That linkage is a very hard to find part. I would jump on that one Drew has. It would also lock up your shifter when your column locks up. Jim
Headers are usually the reason that the linkage is removed. You would have to buy it and try it to find out if it would fit. Do you want headers or nuetral and back-up lights is the question? Jim
