Hi I am currently gathering parts/guidance for swapping out my powerglide for a th400. I already have a new crossmember (th400), trans mount, and the transmission and torque converter. I don't know what other parts I will need to complete the project. If anyone knows what I need any help would be awesome! Also, I know the pontiac 350 I have takes the B.O.P. bolt pattern (which I got) but will the transmission fit to a chevy mill in the future? (I plan to swap the pontiac 350 for a chevy) Thanks again for your help, Brad
you will need to shorten the driveshaft, change the trans yoke on the driveshaft, there are two yokes so make sure you get the right one, one is bigger on the outside, you will need to change shifter as PG's are only two speed. not sure about the cooler line, dont know if there the same size or not. did you get the dip stick with the TH-400? if you want it to kick down when you step on it then you will have to wire in a kickdown switch. Vac line for the modulator, and no it wont fit the Chevy motor with out an adaptor. when you get ready to swap for the Chevy look me up and I will help you with that as I did mine years ago. pretty easy to do. I see your in CA, where?
thanks so much dave for the info. I'm in san jose and I got a 68 project (believe me PROJECT) firebird a couple months ago and I'm trying to save money to fix it up (only 18)
well thats a lot of stuff to do just for that extra gear isnt it?!?! hehe do you know of a good place to come across the new yoke and/or shorten the shaft? how much do you think it will cost me?
Brad There are firebird members in the San Jose area that come on here I think, They also have an E-mail list like the one here. Send me an E-mail and I will give you there E-mail address they will be able to help you out a lot. also they go to Happy Days on thursdays sometimes. My E-mail is firebird69racer@yahoo.com Its nice to see that some of you younger guys are still into the older muscle cars and not the foreign cars
Brad, Wade is right! Hugo, Al, Andy, Brady Bob, Jon, Steve and quite a few others are in the South Bay (Santa Clara/San Jose) and Hugo in particular is a great contact, and has a few Firebirds on his own...
He's done the Over drive tranny swap a few times, and will be able to give you some good tips on just the straight tranny swap in general! If Wade puts you in touch with him, by all means contact him... He's a great guy, and hosts the local F-Body list there in the Bay Area!

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the bird as much as we all do!

If you decide to do the 400 swap it might be cheaper and easier to get a used drive shaft that is already right. I bet if you posted in the parts wanted someone would offer you a deal. The same person would probably have the rest of the parts too. Once you have the parts it's an easy job. Jim
wouldn't happen to know the length of my current driveshaft and the length it needs to be for the th400? or maybe the part number of the yoke i need? thanks again guys you are awesome
When I went from the ST300 to the TH400 I had to have the drive shaft shortened 3/4 of an inch. Cost was something like $35 and I bought a yoke from the driveshaft shop.
I totally missed the 2004r post! (sorry scott) I actually had my eye on one of those and that's why i bought the th400 crossmember originally. I have read alot about transmissions lately and it seems that the 2004r is not as capable of withstanding high horsepower or nitrous applications as the th400 is. I didn't know that the 2004r robs the least power (always a bonus). I plan to build an engine over the summer somewhere between 450-500 horsepower and might add nitrous (i don't drive it around town that much) I was too worried about blowing up a 2004r even though the overdrive would be very nice with my 3.90 gear set. Anyone have any experience with prices or work required for the 200 swap? I know it needs the 400 xmember, tv valve & lockup torque converter/wiring
