I've rounded up a Pontiac jack for my 68 Bird. However, I went to a cruise last night and we had a discussion about the correct color for the base and the bumper hook part of the jack. My buddy with the 68 GTO (orig owner w/22k miles) showed me his jack and it is a medium blue much like a Ford engine blue.
It was my understanding that the jacks for our FGF cars were more like the earlier Pontiac engine blue, kinda like a baby blue. I've got this thing all blasted and primed ready for paint but I am not sure what would be the correct color...
No kidding. That was my guess on the color, that is what it looked like to me.
Ok, what about mounting a full sized spare in the trunk. Does anyone make a hold down rod long enough to accomidate a full size spare? Anyone have a pic of a full size spare mounted in their trunk?
All I did was buy a connector that connects two pieces of threaded rod and a legnth of threaded rod and made an extention for the hold down that I had. This way it mounts where I want it and it was a cheap and easy fix and no one can see it once it is in place. I'll post pics once it is all painted and reinstalled...
Our cars never came with a full size spare did they? If not, that will be yet another search for a space saver and dummy inflation bottle if I can even find one...
Our cars never came with a full size spare did they?
Sure they did. There are even trunk lid stickers showing the spare and jack useage. I think space saver spares were an option.
But, correct me if I am wrong...
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. In '68 option 702 provided a no-cost optional full size spare to match the road tires of the car. The Spacesaver was standard. There are dimples in multiple places in the trunk pan supposedly to help the factory welders locate the place to mount the holddown based on full size vs Spacesaver and convert vs coupe.
I thought I had a picture of one I took of an very nice convert but the tire barely shows at the angle I took the picture.
Is this the correct color? This is the lighter of the two blues I was referring to. My buddy with the 68 GTO his jack is MUCH darker than this, more of what I would call a Royal Blue...
Well I painted mine the "Old Ford Engine Blue" and it is VERY close the correct Pontiac jack paint. I compared them next to one another with the jack from my buddies 68 GTO w/22k orig mile (orig owner no less)...
