I just ordered new seat upholstery from Classic Industries. The guy told me that I need to get the fold down rear seat to fit a 69 Convertible, my rear seat does not fold down, but the guy told me that if it is a convertible that you need the fold down option for the rear seat cause it is a little shorter, because the convertible had arm rests. Is that correct? I already ordered them as fold down, but now I am curious if he is right.
Also does anyone out there know if there is a seat I can buy that would look very close to original for the drivers bucket seat, that would allow me to put the seat back a little father? I am 6' 4" and about 260lbs and have a hard time getting in and out and fitting in to the current bucket seats. My seats do not tilt in anyway, the back is either back or up to let someone out of the back seat. I wish it would allow you to adjust the tilt of the back of the seat and also allow me to slide the seat back another couple inches. Anyone had the same problem and found any good way to resolve that? Putting another type seat in just for driving around and keeping the original seat in the garage wouldn't be a bad option, but I would like to keep the seats looking somewhat original, I do not want modern looks seats in a 69 firebird.
Jeff, You can buy the seat extenders from FireBirdBill , earlybrds@aol.com , they will let you push back another 2" , (he reproduces the factory option)....tell him Bjorn sent ya! re: the 'lean' on the seats , I am not sure ,but cant you adjust it by turning the screws that are the 'stops' for the bacck rest? I havent tried mine siince they are in correct position for me.... but I did buy the extenders, I am only 5' 8" , but I really liked the extra 1" that I use , to get arms right ,legs straight...
The fold down is different and I think the guy messed up your order. What he said does not make sense to me because hard tops had the fold down too. You could ask Ames or Year One the same question and find out if Classic is on the level. Out of all the parts houses Classic industries has messed up the most of my orders! Jim
It sounds like the guy was making Camaro assumptions. I think that the Firebird rear seat is the same width regardless of body type, but that camaros came with three different width rear seats. Some Camaros did not have rear arm rests. That might be where the problem started. Just guessing.
Thanks Bjorn, I will try to email him and ask about those, I can drive it without them, but it is just a little ridiculous.
I will also check on adjustment screws, I have never check on that, It has always seemed like the plastic on the back of the chair just stops it.
As far as the guy at CI telling me I needed the fold down rear seat, I am going to call and cuss that guy if he told me a bunch of BS He told me to hang on, and put me on hold while checking, then came back and told me yea I definitely needed the fold down rear seat option, even though my car has no fold down rear seat. Again this was, as he stated, because he told me that fold down really means "arm rests".
Jeff, I think if you check the screws that come out of the back rest, they have an adjustment? It always looked to me like they would , but I never tried...thats the ones that are stopped by the plastic on the back of the seat cushion.... yes , call Bill , he sells those they really help ..2 " doesnt sound much ,but its a godsend!you wont have to wrap your legs around the column!
You could do what the guy in Police Academy did!Just take the front seat out and sit in the back!seriously now,i never heard of those extensions,so when i put new floors in my car i just welded in some angled iron across the driveshaft tunnel to the door plate area and tapped out some bolt holes. When i did this i set the seat back a few inches for the same reason.worked like a charm!

BTW, I did call Year One, they told me I didnt need the fold down rear seats, unless I have a fold down rear seat, so I called CI back and had them change it, they told me the order had not shipped yet, and they were going to run and change it.
Also I ordered those seat extenders from Earlybird. He has them posted on ebay here. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7900074530&ssPageName=ADME:B:BN:MT:1
Jeff, let me know how you like them , mine was great. I can stretch my legs , straighten my arms ... oh , and by the way i painted mine black and mtd on top of carpeting,I have blk interior , Karl ( I think he`s in Austin) , mounted his under the carpet in his red interior car , looks great , just cut a small slit where the bolt goes...
I have my extensions and couldn't be happier. Painted mine black on top of the carpet and they work great. I'm only 6' tall but wider than the average male. Even nicer since I put in a tilt wheel!!
