Pulled my 67 firebird gas tank, and want to remove the guage sending unit. Is there a special tool for this, and which way does the retainer turn? Thanks Louie
Counter clockwise. Yes, there is a special tool but you can use a flat blade screwdriver. Progressively tap each of the tabs back and forth. New rings can be had from just about any dealership for a couple of bucks if needed

Please use extreme caution when working with a nearly empty gas tank. The explosive force capabilities of a gas tank is quite large. I would suggest wrapping the tip of the screwdriver with electrical tape to minimize the likely hood of creating a spark.

It's harder to get the new one in than out. Took me and both boys to get the new one in with a new O-ring. As Jeff states... use a brass draft, those tabs bend easily.
I put a little vasoline on the o-ring when I put mine back together and it popped right back in.
We ARE talking about a car here, right?
