I have a 67 Firebird 400 Convertible, 4bbl. It has the 3 speed automatic transmission, PB, PS, PW, Power Top and AC My engine code is YF, instead of the YT which I believe should be correct for that transmission. I am assured this is the original motor and have done some research and found on the Hemmings site that the YF was indeed used on the 67. I have submitted for the PHS docs and have not received them yet. I have emailed the PHS and he said it should be a YT code. Can somebody please give me some info?
These are now 40+ year old cars. Many strange things could have happened to them along the way. My entire rear axle was swapped out from the 3.08 ratio that PHS says it left the factory with to a 2.56 ratio.

I have checked 2 sites and can't find that casting number.
Alright - Post # 3000

Thanks for all your replies and they have all been helpful. I am not trying to discredit any opinions or theories here, I am just trying to get this right. If you follow the Hemmings link on the bottom here and scroll to Pontiac, it says that the YF and YT motors were in the Firebird. However, to further validate everyone on this post, Hemmings is the ONLY site I have found this information. If anyone has time, please follow that link and tell me I'm crazy! I'm really sorry for all the posts!
The YE and YF are DEAD wrong. Pontiac would never, ever place a YF or YE coded engine in a Firebird when a Full sized car had the same code. There were reasons Pontiac used specific codes with specific cars. I am sure if you called PHS with the engine motor unit number and the block code, they will tell you it came from something other than a Firebird.
The YT is Auto The WZ is manual The WI, WQ,and XN are Firebird Ram Air
I too just looked at the Hemmings link and saw that they had all the same (but incorrect) codes for the '67 Ram Air 400 as the "base" 400. They do not differentiate between auto and manual trannys
Note they do not even HAVE a listing for either the Ram Air 1 or II for 1968 Firebirds.
Sorry, but their info is complete crap.

It looks like somebody changed out your engine block along the way. Probably not the previous owner as it appears he passed on to you that the engine was original. Most likely a owner previous to that that failed to pass that information along.

Hemmings and other periodicals are notoriously loose with facts. Many other printed books are not much better. And the web is full of inaccurate or sketchy information as well. So who do you trust?
1. Original factory literature 2. Reputable, acknowledged "experts" 3. Owner forums like this, where info is out in the open and the user pool is big enough and interested enough to correct misinformation.
YF is not original to your car.

Since the block is not correct for your car, lets try'n find out what yr. There is a casting # on top of the block(passinger side) next to the distributor. What is it? May still have cylinder correct heads. What are the raised casting #'s on the center and/or outer exhuast ports below the valve covers? While we'r at it, what is the casting # on the intake manifold? Should be on top of #1 runner(drivers front).
