HI i just swapped out my powerglide for a th400 today and bought a new B&M shifter and aluminum driveshaft from Inland Empire Driveline which they say will fit 67-69 camaro/firebird with a TH400 (pn CF6769-400). The problem is that now i have the trans all mounted and new crossmember in place, the driveshaft is about an inch too long and I can't bolt it to the rear end. A couple of you super cool guys on this forum told me that I would need the origional driveshaft from the powerglide shortenedand the yoke changed, so i figured I would just get a new one. If anyone knows what length the driveshaft is supposed to be I would really appreciate it wheras the one I bought and the one from the powerglide appear to be the same length when held up next to each other althought the yokes are different. I am really frustrated by this mix up and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brad
I would call the place you got the driveshaft from and tell them it doesn't fit and give them a measurement that will work. Remember to make an allowance for the driveshaft to move slightly in and out of the tranny for suspension travel. Easiest way to check the travel you may need would be install the driveshaft into the rear end, remove the shocks and then get someone to bounce (gently and slowly) the back of the car as you take your measurement for travel at the tranny or wait from someone else to reply with an amount of travel to allow for.
I can't take credit for being one of the "cool dudes" you mentioned but my advice stays the same; post that you need a drive shaft on the "parts wanted" and someone will get in touch with you about a used one that is right without mods. If I were you I would go to my favorite old junk yard and dig around in their drive shaft pile until I found the correct yoke and the correct length drive shaft. If you go this route and nobody else comes up with your measurement I will crawl under my car and measure mine up. Just give me a private yell(email). Jim
You could take your current driveshaft to a driveline specialist and have it shortened to proper length. Make sure it is balanced afterwards. Measure the length of both transmissions to determine the difference in legnth to figure how much to shorten the driveshaft.
IF, the place you got it from won't get you the right one (which they should!) I would just take the measurements from center of U-joint to center of U-joint, and take the whole set up (U-Joints, Yolk and shaft) to a local drive line shop and have them shorten it.
I had a project that I swapped a TH350 for a TH400 and had to have a whole new shaft made.. was a little pricey, and had to have them shroten it slightly after it was made... but it worked out ok...
But I'd get after the company that made the shaft.
67thru69 camaro/firebird drivelines are not interchangeable. It makes sense that it was too long because they made it to fit a Camaro. Inland Empire Driveline should have known this...and should shorten the driveline for you for free hopefully. Shortening a driveline is no big deal. I just had one shortened and balanced, with new u-joints, and a yoke for about 200 bucks.
