i just recently bought a 69 bird, 2nd one I owned. I am having problems with starter like last one,starter doesn't want to crank after car gets hot,last car had headers which run close to starter,this one still has factory manifold.I haven't tried new starter yet,but wondering if this is a common problem. any ideas would be great.

Common problem with GM OEM starters, especially with headers. The heat affects the solenoids.

It was recognised by GM even with stock components and in some cases the factory installed a heat shield. They usually get removed during the 40+ year history of our cars.

If you search the Tech archives here, you will find a number of solutions. The best, if originalty is not an issue for you, is probably the high torque mini-starter. Less of a power draw, weighs a lot less and provides lots of clearance for headers.

Fords never seem to have this problem as the starter solenoid is up near the battery.

An option is to obtain a Delco high torque factory starter, they can be identified by a longer tail housing. I've been using one with 1 gauge Ektron (Standard makes them) cables and haven't had a hot start problem in years. I'm also running a set of coated headers.

Thanks for the input. I will try the high torque starter,as for heat shield,I'm not sure about them. My first one I wrapped header with heat wrap and had a plumbers welding patch( foil on one side i think kevlar or some high heat on other) wrapped around starter. Spent long hours sitting around waiting,back before cell phones ,lol.
