Thanks to modern technology (iphone) I am typing this from a parking lot, stranded in my 67 waiting for a flat bed. I was on the highway at about 70mph when I heard a loud bang and the car started shaking. I got it to a parking lot. My TH tranny grinds when in gear and the car rolls while in Park. My guess at this point is the front U joint because but who knows. I was just bored waiting for the tow and wanted to post. At least it is not raining however I am in a not so good part of town. It would be funny if someone tried to steal it and the car would not go anywhere!
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. Looks like the front U joint went a bubye! I am having them both replaced then I'll be back in service. The worst part was waiting for the tow but I was in a restaurant/bar parking lot and the bar stool faced the firebird. Good times all around!
A few yrs ago, I was out in my 69, spent the evening at a friends, then drove home at 10 pm ,top dn,90 mph in left lane on the 3 lane freeway (I 10) ,elbow out the window , by the conc barrier, got home , went to bed, nxt morning got up installed a coupler of helper springs I had bought...drove up the block to see if I felt any difference...going about 5 mph over a speed bumop, crash....see pics., broken ball joint. if that had happened 3 miles earlier = night before....I`d needed a new paint job , some sheet metal work and maybe a new elbow...luckily my buddy was only 2 mi away with his trailer...

I remember a story from high school where a classmate was showing off down a residential street in a Chevelle and popped the front U-joint.
The driveshaft pogo-sticked into the ground, tore off the rear suspension, and the out-of-control car went into somebody's front yard and barely missed the house.

I lost my rear u joint one morning going to work(late again) on the rich/san rafael bridge. Speedo said 95 when I looked down and the gear shift was vibrating wildly. Let off the gas and it sounded like a shotgun went off underneath the car. Looked in the rearveiw mirror and saw my driveshaft doing the bouncy bounce behind me. Must have really freaked out that vw bug that ran over it. Wasted both mufflers and I had to find a new driveshaft. THAT sucked. Still no loop. I learn the hard way.
are you talking about me having a spring adjuster? its there to offset a slightly bent subframe, so the car sits straight...and I cut those springs one coil to lower the front end....it was too far up...maybe it were the wrong springs? with too much strength , former owner installed those...and front end sat too high...but now it sits right ,runs good ,has good suspension

I`ve driven 15k w this car or more since this happened....most of it abv 70 mph......things like these are very rare...can happen on more modern cars also.... best advice is "stay alert" all the time , in any car....

I replace the U joints in my 67 Mustang in 1970, in the carport of my then apt....tested it , drove down the drive between bldgs , stepped on it hard and SMACK!...it came loose...evidently I didnt do it correctly , it was too tight under there with just the Mustang Jack.... bought another set , this time made sure it was done right! and then used a hammer to undo the rear floor boards fresh upward shape! I also took chunkls out of the driveway...but didnt put any fresh concrete in...lol
