OK, thanks for looking. My 68 has a bearing going out on the right rear. Do I have to removed the complete Diff in order to remove the axle and have a new bearing pressed on? Any thing else I should look for besides the bearing and axle?
By the way, I bought three NOS 3.36:1 Pontiac US made gears in GM boxes, and thel all look like the day they were made. I'm planing on using one when I get that far. Good day friends.
Four bolts hold the axle retaining plate to the end of the rear housing if you have the original BOP 8.2 rear. They are accessed after removing the brake drum. To clear the work area, I remove the brake hardware first.
When the axle shaft is out, before the bearing is removed, check to see if the bearing's inner race spins or slides on the shaft. After the bearing is removed, look for grooves on the shaft. Check the splines at the diff end.
There is a frequently omitted axle seal gasket that I always replace.
