This should probably be a seperate thread than my convertible header trim color question. I have a '68 convertible and now have the new header chrome trim. But how do I mount the trim? I sort of pryed the old ones off, but I don't want to force the new ones on. There must be a procedure that I don't know, because it seems like the only way to get them on is to really deform them. What is the best way?
I am in a panic, because I am getting married this Sat. and we are using the car to drive from the church to the reception. So needless to say, I need to figure this out soon!
Another question... there is some grey putty type sealer on the inside of the old trim. Is it absolutly necessary for me to use it on the new trim? I don't drive in the rain, but I guess I could get caught in the rain from time to time.
What do I call it when I go to the auto parts store? It is more like putty than caulking. The way the trim needs to be bent over the windsheild frame, I can't believe it keeps moisture out, as you can't really test the fit and add more if necessary.
Header mouldings require large quantities of swearing! If they are repo mouldings - none of them fit worth a cr@p. I used some butyl sealant on mine, but you can used strip caulk from the auto parts store as well.

I cannot offer any solid advice on the installation other than maybe lightly tap them all around with a rubber mallet so you are not necessarilly using brute force. You could use a roll of plumbers putty to replace the old.Best of luck and i hope you can make it work

I just installed mine last night and it wasn't that bad. First thing to do is install the door window channel trim, where the weather striping rides, because it sits under the side windshield trim, you have 2 screws that the door window channel fits under, to hold it down, and you can't tighten them with the side windshield trim in place, they are located right next to the windshield, and also don't install the top screw in the door channel trim because the header molding goes under the that. "Geez"..Then install the windshield trim, start with the bottom trim first, put in all 7 screws loosely, then install the side widshield trim and top windshield trim together at the same time, as they inter connect with each other, it's nice to have an extra person help to keep everything together. Snap the side windshield trim into the clips, the top piece will still be a little loose which is ok, it will tighten up when the header molding gets pushed into the same area. Then start installing the drivers side header molding first because it goes under the pass side header molding. The easiest way I found was to slide the molding onto the header, start from the far edge and slide the molding towards the center, once you line up fairly close with the screw holes, roll the molding toward the windshield, and push it down into the backside of the clips that the windshield trim is attached to. This takes a little effort, to slide the molding, I had to smack it a little with my hand, pry and push, to get it into place. Then do the same for the pass side, just slide it down the rail, then roll it into the windshield trim. You'll also have to lift up, on the outside end of the header molding, to get it under the door channel trim. argh.. Once in place you can tighten the bottom screws on the windshield trim, and the top screws, on the header molding, then install the door window channel weather stripping and the top screw on the door channel molding. You should have your seats out to do this so you can stand up in the car and have easier access. I hope this helps, and that I'm not too late, but i wasn't sure how to put it back together, because it's been a couple months since I took it apart, and I didn't want to steer you wrong. Good luck and congrats on the wedding. I also wish there was a "HOW TO" section on this forum, as I've figured out a couple things that I couldn't find on here, that I would like to share. Oh well I'll just start another topic.
