I have been told by a mechanic that my rear is not the original that came with the car. It is a mono-learf perch with the rear control arm brackets on the underside of both sides. Only the Pass side control arm is installed. There are two eye holes on the top side of the differential. This is what makes him believe that it is not the original. He also saqys he sees weld seams at the ends of the tubes right near the backing plates. Any idea as to who is right?? Thanks
Pictures would help but I'm guessing it is not the correct rear end. Mono leaf would have been correct for 67 only. Staggered shocks started in 68. You should not have any control arm brackets since our cars never came with coil springs.
What you are describing is the correct rear end for a 1967 Firebird, hopefully yours is a '67.
They are actually Tempest rears pulled out of the parts bins so there are control arm eyelets at the top for Tempests that are not used on the Firebird.
The factory also installed traction bars on the axles to control wheel hop with the mono springs. To over simplify, auto cars got one bar on the right, stick cars got 2. There will be corresponding floor pan reinforcement plates on the rear floor under the seats and "Riv-Nuts" installed in the rear frame rails to anchor the front bracket for the traction bars. All axles had the flanges welded to the bottom for both bars.
The rear suspension for '67 is one of those nice oddities for '67 along with vent windows.

This is a picture of the original rear end from my '67.
Does this look like the one from your car?
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I think some early diffy housings came with the ears for control arms. A shared trait for the A body.
