i was taking out my old gas tank to replace with a new one and i was just kinda going alog for the ride b/c i had never done this befor. And i came across the fule lock ring and the fuel sending unit, and i was wondering do you have to have the lock ring tool to take off the lock ring? can you take off the fule sending unit without taking off the lock ring? any advice would be great. Thanks
im only 15 but doing all the work on my bird, cant wait to get her on the road!
The ring has to be spun off, it is likely rusted in pretty good? I took a small drift and tapped it off along one of the indents, which basically destroyed it beyond my liking anyhow, only to find the sending unit was a mess anyway so replaced tank, sending unit and lock ring.
Make sure you use a brass drift, you dont want any sparks.
Also, when you go to put the new one on, you might want another set of hands to help push down on the ring while you tap & rotate it into it's locked position. It a bear to do this by yourself.
They usually have them at the regular auto parts places. That's where I got mine.
