I removed the old trim that covers the top of the windshield on my 69 conv. There is some kind of putty used for weatherstripping or adhesion. What is the putty? Do I need it? Where do I get it?

home depot, i think its called gray rope caulk, I been told on here that you need some type of putty that does not get hard.
