My '68 Bird has a 200R4 behind the 350HO motor and I have a manual switch to switch it into and out of overdrive. I have been having issues with it not wanting to switch out of O/D once it heats up. When I start out, the trans shifts exactly as I want and shifts into and out of O/D no problem. Once I have run the car for a bit, it doesn't want to switch out of O/D. I have double checked the geometry of the TV cable on the carb and the switch seems to be operating fine. I was hoping someone might have some thoughts on what might be causing my problem.
Does it stay in 4th gear, or does the converter stay locked up? I have never heard of a switch that lets it go into O/D. Just the converter lock up feature. If it is the converter lock up you are talking about, it is hopefully just the lock up soliniod inside the trans, it is a fairly easy change, or I had a fresh 200R4 get a piece of debris (chip) caught under the plunger that the lock up soliniod actuates, holding it open. Good luck, and tell us what you find.
Back to transmission 101 for me. I guess I must mean locking up the torque converter - once I am cruising at highway speed, I click a manual toggle switch and my RPMs drop by a few hundred. When I want to slow down or speed up to pass, I click the switch off, the RPMs jump a bit and I am good to go. Am I just locking up the converter?
