hi again, i finally recived my new fuel sending unit and i noticed that the black wire that came with the new unit is only a foot or so long. And on the old one it has the black one and then it has a long 2-3 foot green wire that has been attached to it.
do i need to do that for the new one?
im only 15 but doing all the work on my bird, cant wait to get her on the road!
The black wire is the ground wire. It attaches to a screw into the floor pan tank bracket just in front of the tank.
I have forgotten how the sender wire attaches.

ok thanks for the answers, thats what i thought i was just wondering why my old one had that gren wire attached to the ground. oh well guess it doesnt matter. All i need to do is install my gastank and then the driveshaft tail seal and i can drive her!!

ok i hit a problem. my black wire is to short to reach its ground place. its so short it barley can stick out of the hole in the trunk. what is this used for? do i really need it?

The black ground wire does NOT travel rearward over the tank into the trunk. It goes forward and sideways to the passenger side bracket welded to the floorpan IN FRONT of the tank where the passenger side gas tank strap slides into.
There should be a small hole there and a small sheet metal screw. You fuel gauge will never read unless you connect this ground.

The ground wire does not go up through the trunk. The ground wire attaches to a screw that is screwed into the floor pan (if I remember correctly) from under the car, not far from the front edge of the tank. All is all it really doesn't matter where you attach the ground wire as long as it is attached well so you are getting a true ground...
A secret - I have learned to post and then reread to make edits instead of "polishing" before I post.

well mabey thats why i have been so confused this whole time.hah the person who had the car befor me had added a extra 3ft of wire and attached it above the trunk floor and near the gas hole. I went ahead and drilled a hole in the floor pan and ground the sheet metal down to get all the paint and dirt off and i screwed it in firmly. i assuem this will do fine correct?

If you have an electrical multi-meter you could check for continuity. If the meter beeps, then your ground is good.
