Is there an electric cooiling fan that I can take from a newer firebird, to fit my 67 (looking for a cheap cooling solution, and increase in HP)? Also, what elese would I have to do to get it working (what electrical parts do I need)?
I know a guy who went this route, dynoed the car with stock fan then electric fan. This was done on the same dyno on the same day. There was litterally NO HP gain, zero. Just mentioning this just as a heads up...
Hey welcome to the forum, where in ontario are you from?there's a bunch of us in the chatham, woodstock, fergus area. do a search on this site for overheating issues and find the root of your problem. .it also depends alot on what engine hp you're running.
Thanks for the info. I live in Belmont (just outside of London). I read an article in Car Craft magazine about ten years ago that claimed that up to 20% HP gain, when an electric fan was used (you don't have to drive the propeller). The fans are also closer to the rad, so I thought that it would cool better (???). I have a 326 engine, and I installed headers, and the engine compartment seems too hot.....I also installed a flexible dipstick, and it was 'rigid' when the engine was cold, then when I ran the engine, I thought that it was going to melt (like a cold spaghetti noodle, then like a boiled spaghetti noodle). I don't want to take my headers off, if possible; this engine (or tranny- 2 speed ST300), is too slow as is. I am thinking of putting a 400 engine with a Th350 tranny.
All I have is the temp sender (not sure if it is working) that has the dummy light, but it seems too hot by feel. I am going to get a temperature gauge that bolts into the intake, like the one that someone else had on this site.
hot by feel is probably not hot...a Pontiac engine is hot when running over 220F... you can buy a cheap temperature gun...I bought one online for $20...then you can see temps all over your engine , and locate hot spots if you have any
