Took the car for a safety inspection in order to get registration ( moved to Ontario). Problem was no defroster , no sticker. The heater was disconnected years ago, I remember that the fan was functioning. I checked the relay on the inside passanger side and there is power, power also to the switch ? Must be a bad ground but I cant follow the brown wire that runs off the switch. I hate electrical problems, anybody experienced something like this and can give me some ideas.
Wow! Years ago when we had similar safety inspections, all vehicles older than ten years were automatically exempt. (these inspections were soon killed by the legistlature because they finally admitted they were a waste of money)
All of a sudden, prices on cars that were 11 years old spiked.
But now back to your question about the brown wire...
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. Going from memory , three wires from the relay to the switch, 2 were live 3rd probably ground. On the switch the brown was not live with the power on. If I cant locate the fault, is there a way to hot wire the switch to get the blower to start?
I believe the black goes to the fan motor....check for power when the switch is on on the black terminal, if there is nothing, yet power on the other side of the switch, then it may be your switch...try some contact cleaner. If there IS power on the black wire side, then either your black wire is open or cut, or not properly attached to the back of the blower motor. The motor is grounded to the firewall thru the casing.
Did you check the resistor as well as the switch? Also, make up a long jumper cable, and connect it to the power and to the blower to test it.
Dave, I was planning to do that tonight once it stops raining. This inspection process for the ministry in Ontario is bizarre. Car is driven 200 miles per year with the top down on sunny days. The garage guys are worried that a spot inspection could result in them receiving a fine for signing off a car with no defroster.Meanwhile it continues to pour rain so I am not so pi**ed off not driving the car while on vacation. Let you guys know the results of my quest. Larry
