I've been reading alot in different places lately about the lack of ZDDP in new oils. Just curious what every one runs in their bird for oil. I've been running 10w-30 in my 68 400. Haven't had a problem yet. Has anyone here had a problem attributed to oil?
I have been using a couple of 20 year old cases of Valvoline 10w-30 for mine. I think I have a couple of oil changes worth left.
But once my engine / trans is rebuilt over this winter, I shouldn't have to worry anymore. But I'll still stick to Valovoline. I grew up on the stuff.
No problems at all.

I use the same Pennzoil conventional oil (30W for a 400HO) I have used for 39 years. I now add ZDDP Plus to that oil to replace the ZDDP reduced in the product by the EPA.
As David mentions, do a search. There a lot of historical discussion of it.
I went to a roller camshaft setup in my builder engine to avoid this whole mess. The builder put in Vavoline 30 wt Racing Oil and that's what I am going to use.
The builder also broke in my engine on his shop dyno so I knew we were over THAT hurdle before I installed the engine.

I kinda get the impression that most guys are running the ZDDP additive. When I first started hearing about all this it just seemed strange to me that it seems like there is only one comnpany making an additive. Most of the articles I've read quote ZDDP plus' info. And I'm sure they want to sell their stuff. But I also believe that the oil manufacturers are changing the additives in oil because of environmental reasons. Makes sense. I don't mind spending the extra $$'s for an additive to keep my engine safe if its necessary.
