May be a stupid question, but what is the best way to drain the residual coolant from the block?

Pull the motor, strip it, get a good grip on it and shake it vigorously JK. Some blocks have drain plugs on either side, they are small and I don't know how much you'd get out. I've always hooked a hose up to the heater core inlet hose and ran it till it came out clear(being sure to capture all the used coolant of course)Short answer, you'll never get all coolant or water out while it's in the car. I always drain a gallon of coolant and add a 50/50 premix every year. Been fine that way for many many years.

I am installing a new rad, and wanted to use distilled water and antifreeze.

I will try the backflush through the heater hose, but was hoping there was a drain plug somewhere, I will take a hard look around.

Theres 1/8th pipe drain plugs on both sides of the block.
