Hello all, I just picked up a 68 Firebird and trying to do a little research on the car. How can I tell if the 400 hood is origional or a reproduction?
The repro ones I have seen (but I don't know which brand) have a very thin metal edge along the front that does not extend as far down as an OEM one. And the metal itself seemed very thin, and the hood was definetly lighter.
It's probably hard to tell if you haven't handled an OEM one quite a bit.
Also if it is incredibly clean on the underside and the top of the leading edge, it's probably a repop. Those are the areas that rust out first.
But just my 2 cents worth...
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. the best way to tell, is that the repops are marked "good mark" on the area where the latch is. they are slightly lighter. rust was my factor in replacing my hood. once its on and the letters are filled in they are virtually identical. they fit nice and look great. sure original is great if no rust and dont have 40 yrs of abuse. as a alternative, they fit the bill fine. they are purist who snub them; but, its not the hood thats important its the cars documentation and who owns it. if you want the look that cost less than originals, then go for it. if your a purist dont.
I don't really care about being pure. I just want a car that drive and looks nice. I just picked up a 350 hood to replace my hood since I like the smooth look better. I plan on selling the 400 hood I just don't know weather to advertise it as oem or not.
