We gave up DirecTV about 5 months ago. Of all the things we've lost over the past year, FoxNews is at the top of the list! We used to watch Glen, Hannity & O'Rilley every night, sure miss them...
Yea, that might be a lux. I will be giving up (I sure hate 2, but.) We listen in on the radio at work to all three, GOOD STUFF. Really promotes thinking, that's why I like them .....

The internet too, your crazy!!!! I found this ad that you might like.
I just heard that too. Congress is reviewing a bill that would give the president the power to shut down the internet in case of a national emergency. The bill does not, however, define what an emergency is.
Quenton and Montreux_Blue, you need to look at Iran And the Philipines obviously you haven't seen what N. Korea has been doing since the Internet conception (that AL GORE invented, ha ha) They have shut-down the Inet on a daily basis, whenever it doesn't work for the government it pulls the plug. Don't listen to NBC (OBANMA station!) CBS and CNN both which stand for communism networks, They are nothing but FEEL GOOD STATIONS, everything is great.... no problems.... these people report the news while on Opium or some prescribed drugs to DULL down reality, and your conception of it. turn away and don't look into the light......

LOL You're letting your political views interfere with reality.
Perhaps I should have clarified my rather simple suggestion. Access to the internet can be controlled and limited, but the "internet" is always there. The internet wasn't "invented." It was designed and developed. It was designed and developed long before cable broad band and ISP's. Just because you can't get to the internet through your computer's modem does not mean that it can be "shut down."
That the government can control wide-spread access to the internet might be true in many places, but the technology is available to use the internet even in the absence of an active ISP.
For every system, there's an equally capable system designed to subvert all safeguards of that system. That you can't make use of it doesn't stop those who can.
NA I'm not saying they would or could but to SUGGEST something of such is frankly, scarey. Heck they had the underground railroad to free slaves in the civil war. Just when you say you can't crack the Iphone an 8th grader was the first to do it with in the first 2 days of sales. And then the use native americans for code-talking in WW II. Political or not still MY views and therefore have an opinion on it, just babbling through life.

A few ways around a "private network shutdown", which would undoubtedly mean controlling US based DNS servers to block IP addresses assigned to commercial vendors, would be to use other DNS servers, to have a gov't or major university job, to have a dialup connection to another country's ISP...and many others.
The biggest issue with government invading this field is that the internet is a utility and a communications venue. Shutting down any portion of the IP ranges would wreak havoc on businesses and individuals using VoIP phone systems and e-commerce. Comparing it to 9/11 grounding of aircraft is ridiculous, it's not at all the same. Grounding aircraft inconvenienced several thousand people, it didn't shut down workplaces for millions.

That was one of the things I think Bush wanted to charge per e-mail since they weren't getting any money off e-mails.... We'll go back using smoke signals. ha ha ha

For every attempt at control, there will be 10 ways to circumvent it (or more). Look what happened with the telephone industry. As soon as reasonably high speed internet came about, internet telephony jumped right in. We have thousands of phone numbers in our call center, including a large supply of 800#s, and only a handful of land lines, primarily used for 911 service, alarm system, and a couple of old fashioned backup fax machines.
And I have stretched beyond the limits of our telecom system, which uses IP phones, and gone to a phoneless phone. Just my USB headset and a free software client and I can use the work phone system to call anywhere.
