I have a 69 convertible and have had a problem with the top for about a year. Putting the top up / down, the middle hinge (just above the driver's seat)does not fully retract / extend without manual intervention help. Any thoughts on what the problem might be and how to fix it?
Try a little penetrating oil on the joint first, then cycle the top up and down a few times. If that frees it up, I'd apply a little grease. If the problem persists, it may be the bushing is shot and that joint is binding.
I am having the same problem with my '67. We just hooked up the hydraulics, the motor runs fine, but when we are dropping the top, the first hinge won't bend without assistance, then she lowers OK. The top raises with no problem, the hinges are all lubed, and apparently mobile when flexed manually, but that first hinge stays locked as we (attempt to ) lower the top every time, no exceptions. Any input would be appreciated. - John
I think most of these vert top folding problems can be traced back to material stretched too tight across the top. When installing a new top the frame needs to be checked and aligned with the window openings...at least that's what I've heard from top/upholstery guys. Just my 2 cents...
Was your car originally manual top? You can tell by either the PHS or by reading the stamping on the inside of the top frame.
Vikki, Correct diagnosis - I saw an earlier post you made on the same subject circa 3/09. Interestingly, my PHS says power top, but the frame has FM stamped on the arm - accordingly we reinforced the frame to prevent the bucklng that occurs during conversion of manual to power, but our current predicament suggests I am missing something...Regards - John
