I am finally getting started on restoring a project I purchased last year. My car came with a smog pump (1 of 1220) according to the PHS paper work I have.It came with a ugly black air cleaner assy I am pretty sure it is the correct base but it came with a black lid. Does anyone know if they came with chrome lids like the non smog 400s?I have searched alot of picts and havent seen the setup I have yet. Prob not alot of the 1220 made to even know what was factory correct? Thanks in advance for your help Tom
"non-smog" 400's came with louvered chrome "pancake" style air cleaners. Both the base and top were chrome.
However, I believe I was told the CA smog 400's came with the regular black snorkle base with a chrome lid.
I have an original CA Black/Yellow plate 67 400. I pulled the smog pump a long time ago (but kept it). If you can post a photo, I can compare your setup to how my car was when I bought it. I cannot post my photos as I took them with a 35mm camera. I cannot confirm the correct original air cleaner as my car had an aftemarket Edelbrock one on it at the time of purchase.
I do know that there were unique aluminum plates that bolted to the front of both cylinder heads and I have those along with the pump, backfire valve, and smog pump. I had to remount the passenger side plate as it also serves as the PS pump mounting bracket.

PS, you need a web photo hosting site like Photobucket to post here.
PPS, I believe there is a thread in the Firebird Research Section about the CA 400 air cleaner.

Well I found that Research thread and completely forgot that it was I who found a good photo of the CA 400 air cleaner:
"If anybody wants to see a good photo of the California only snorkel air cleaner setup, there's one in a restoration article on a CA spec '67 FB 400 in the July 09 edition of Hemmings Muscle Machines."
I kept all those magazines, so I will be able to compare your photo to that article.
