Had the tires balanced on my truck and they said I have lateral runout on one tire. I asked them what that meant and they said the tire was worn on one side. Does that sound right? I never heard this term before. Thanks Barry
QUIT taking them left handers so dang hard... put more stagger in the left rear or lower the pressure in the right side??? Am I right? Just kidding, seroiusly though any broke belts in that tire? May just be a bad tire. No, I ever heard that before.
I'd rather see a rust bucket on the road, than a garage queen anytime!!
I would have them spin the rim by itself to make sure it is not out of round (radial runout) and that it doesn't wobble from side to side (lateral runout.) If the rim checks out there is a problem with the tire.
Was this tire on the front or back? If the wear is even on the one side and it is severe enough to cause lateral runout I would say you have a camber problem with your wheel alignment.
With a broken belt I would expect you would feel vibration through the steering wheel or in the seat of your pants. It wouldn't be a pleasant sensation either but it would feel expensive.
Tire was on the front. They have about 35k on them. I had new ball joints put on the front about 1000 miles ago. Also had a wheel alignment done. They wanted me to bring it back so they could check it after 1000 miles. That is when I had them rotate and balance the tires. The truck usually sits for a week or two at a time until I drive it to my farm.Sometimes it feels like it has a bad tire but it goes away after driving for a little bit(Flat spots?). Thanks for the replies. Barry
Lateral runout would mean you have a bent rim, side to side (high spot). I don't see how lateral runout would wear out one side of the tire, unless the rim was severely bent. That effect is more of a caster/camber issue. The tech wasn't being correctly technical.

When you say farm I think of mud. The feeling of a bad tire could be from the accumulation of dirt/debris causing the tire wheel assembly to be thrown out of balance. I would hope they cleaned the tires and rims before they balanced them.
A week or two of sitting shouldn't cause flat spots.
Do you have a Ford? How many times had the tires been rotated in the first 35k?
Is this a newer truck? I had the pee hole in the drive shaft plug. It thru off the balance of the truck. BROKE the output shaft twice on the 4 wheel drive unit. Just my .02 check your drive shaft.
