my car goes in for body and paint in about 2 weeks, the car will be painted red but i'm not sure on the shade.the red that is on it now i like some days and others not,i don't know what name of red it is as it was on the car when i got it.there is quite a few red cars on this site and i was wondering if you guys could post you're colour name and codes.i don't like the real dark reds ,the one on Bjorns car is nice ,as well as Daves in BC. any suggestions?
That's funny actually. The Pontiac '69 Matador Red does look darker than the '68 Chevy Matador Red which is actually the same color as Pontiac Solar Red.
Looking at the color chips for '67, Pontiac had a Regimental Red that year that looks to have a different code than '68's Solar Red but I know seeing it, it does look similar.
The Matador Red (52) is a dark red or maroon. Carousel Red (72) is orange. You might be thinking of the Claret Red (86), but that was a '69 GP color only.
2007 GM color (code 27 if I remeber correctly, I'd have to check the left-over can) Closest match in a modern BC/CC that I could find to the 69 Matador Red.

Thanks guys, how about you daveswhiterock68 ? this has got to be one of the hardest things to do,picking a color! .so far i like Jim's solar red. it is so hard to tell from a little paint chip what a whole car painted that color would look like.
If you want some more shots in different lighting situations, PM me. (FYI, I used original style acrylic lacquer to so it could look different with a modern paint with a clearcoat.)
One of the best reds I've ever seen is one called Velocity Red, Mazda uses it. It is absolutely RED as red can be... Here is a Solar Red 67 GTO compared to the Velocity Red 65 Tempest:
In the last pic above you can see how orange the Solar Red paint color really is compared to a more fire engine red...
My friend Mike ordered 17 different pint cans of reds before finding the one he settled on from the Mazda line. Our painter friend Dave shot 17 test panels so Mike could make up his mind. I've never seen so many shades of red... LOL
The brand he used is a paint system called Matrix. Be prepared, red paint is super expensive right now, the paint alone to do the Tempest was $1100.00 for JUST the paint!!!
But when you spend 20k to restore a basic plain jane Tempest w/rubber floor mats (no carpet) I guess $1100 for paint is no biggie...
IMO the velocity red is one of the very few reds that does not look orange at all. And when he brings it to a cruise/show EVERYONE comments on how nice of a red it is. You would not beleive the people this car attracts due to the color. The car just took Best GM out of more than 300 top end GM cars at the Daytona Dream Cruise this past Oct. I'm not big on red personally, but this color just screams!!!
I had a bit of a tough time as the 6" x 8" samples of solar red looked a bit blue purple hue. On the car it's awesome tho, very happy...plus I did want the stock color.
i,m not worried about stock colors ,i just want a nice red.my car isn't going to be a show car ,but i do want a nice driver.these pictures are helping alot thanks guys.
About a week after I painted my 9 I saw the color I would like to have had. You said you didn't want anything too dark but Audi had a shade of red that is real dark. It came on, maybe, 2004 or 2005 TTs. At least that's what I saw it on. That color would look very seductive on a bird. It's what I'm putting on next time if I can afford it.
One thing I forgot to mention about the Mazda color. It is supposed to have a peal coating over the top, however, in this case the peal coat was not applied.
I think he's getting a new one. Something about Army / Navy...?
