Wifey wants a gps for the car. Any recommendations or dislikes? Something not too complicated.
Thanks, Barry

complicated you mean like you giving directions laugh

They are all pretty good and easy to use.....get one with bluetooth for the cell phone speaker as well, seeing as tho they are outlawing handheld use....

I have a Tom-Tom. Easy to use and gets me where I want to go. It has more features than I will ever use. My wife won it at a local fund raiser so I don't even know what the cost is.

I've gone one step further nowdays due to my vision. I let the former GPS (direction giver) do the driving. Kinda nice not hearing, slow down, stop here, turn here, get over, don't get over, too close, too far blah blah blah.... LOL

I like the Garmin Nuvi. I've bought a couple of them and the Walmart web site has great deals on them.

Something I forgot to ask. Someone at work said that there is a new gps satelite going up soon and the current gps's will be obsolete. Any truth to that?
Thank all, Barry

I have an older Nuvi, maybe a 07 model, in the work truck and a brand new Nuvi 270 my wife bought me over the summer that I have used a handful of times. Since I have driven around DFW for 11 years only using MAPSCOs and just started using these, I prefer a MAPSCO. It just seems almost every single time I use one it takes me the most funky stop light infested way. If I know the basic area of my location, I take the fastest way I know and then let it recalculate about 10 times and tell me to turn around until I get close to the place and let it finish the locating. To me it seems like it uses the same software as Google Map because I'm always correcting the route on there too. And I have tried it with different settings like "fastest route" and "shortest route" and both fail in my book. But since I have only used the Garmins Nuvi, I can't tell you how good or bad the others are.

And when I say I use a MAPSCO, I mean I sit in the truck and figure out the route BEFORE I drive, not as I'm driving or have my helper be the GPS.

GPS uses dozens of satellites all over the world. There is no truth to that rumor nor would they put so many aviators and ships/boats at risk.

I use the Verizon Navigator in my cell phone, and don't pay the subscription, just pay the 1.99 data charge if I use it any given month.

Does not work in Canada but otherwise very convenient, less of a theft target, and constantly updated. Doesn't sound as naggy as most of the GPS voices.

Tom Tom is dutch. The guy that started it is a billionaire. Lives in London though..

However, I own a Mio. It's okay. I think they're all quite a like. I'ld go for one of the big brands.

I have a Garmin....rented one in a rent car 1.5 yrs ago, liked it...not sure of model, but I bought myself one and my daughter one, both used from EBay, paid about $135 for one $150 for the other.....both work fine...with the exception on a 10-15 miles stretch of I10 in Houston...LOL...
maps not updated for the 16 lane piece ...so you can be in the middle lanes ,it tells you to "enter freeway", then recalculates...LOL

I don't have one in any of my vehicles but I use Garmin on my boat. It is a combination GPS and Chartplotter. I got it cheap because we are a Garmin dealer at work. I also purchased the computer program with it so I can plot my courses and enter all waypoints from the comfort of home. After the waypoints are entered I download them into the unit and go. It is an excellent program/unit. I can also download updates direct from the Garmin website.

I have a Garmin Nuvi as well. Been working great so far (all the way from Alaska to Wisconsin.) Has more crap built in it than I'll ever need.

I use a Garmin Rino 320, as it has the GMRS Radio and shows other Rino users (my buddies) position on the screen....great for hunting.

I have a Garmin StreetPilot 7200. The screen is 7.2 inches, it's absolutly massive. The only downside to it is that Pigtones doesn't have the software available for downloading new voices onto it, such as Stewie, Peter Griffin, and Cartmen.
