Hi folks. I have browsed this site for a little while but this is my first posting. thanks foir a great site. There is a lot of info but I'm lost how to figure out my cars equipment. Just before Thanskgiving I was offered a relatives Firebird. It is a 68 coup with a manual trans. It doesn't run and I don't know if it has a 3 or 4 or 5 speed. I do know it has the wrong engine because it has the right engine (as tole to me) with it in the shed. It is in a cousins shed covered up but it looks pretty bad. It belonged to his stp father whose now past.

So I have some need for help in figuring out the vin number. The shed with the car in it is coverd with snow but I have the title with the vin on it and the tags number. I looked at the part here where it has the code analyser but all the numbers are different. where does the code for the engine go?

Welcome to the site!
You're going to need to look at the engine block to get the engine code. It would be on the front of the engine block on the passenger side just under the head. This link might help you: http://www.yearone.com/yodnn/tech/Vehicl...23/Default.aspx
It should be a two letter code. Also look for the casting number on the back next to the distributer, those numbers will be able to tell us the year.
The 8th place in your vin will be a 1 or 6. 1 indicates it was a 8 cyl, 6 means 6 cyl.

Thanks for the welcom and thanks for the other site info. That other site has the right numbers. Now I know the engine is a V-8 and it was built in Lordstown. But where does it say that is is a bic block or a small block? The engine is under another tarp I can get there to look at it over the weekend.

Pontiac only made one size V8 block except later 301's.
Bigger then a small block chevy, smaller then a big block.
Main diff's are 3" vs 3.25" crank mains, stroke, and bore.

Leave that Chevy thinking behind. No big block, small block here. Just one block size for the V-8's. Cubes are displaced with bore and stroke.

Thank you this is really good info since I dont know which stuff came with the car I have. I am used to the small and big block engine because of my chevys. why do people call the engine a big block?

Because they don't know any better.

If you have a small block instead of a big block you have just as much power with half the wight on the front axel.
