I need to get some touch up paint for my '68 Solar Red Convertible. Can anyone point me in the direction of the mixing codes for this color? What paint manufacturer would you recommend?

It is becoming difficult to get solar red. I purchased some Dupont Acrylic Lacquer before they stopped mixing it on Jan 1 this year. Take a look at my webpage http://www.geocities.com/jims68fb/SolarRed.html to see the codes and the stuff I purchased.

I had tried to get some urethane mixed for it but the paint shops told me none of their urethanes had the formula for the solar red (Chevy matador red). They tried to computer match some and it turned out too orange.

I'd recommend looking in the phone book for a shop that sells exclusively automotive paint to shops. Ask if they have the camera color matching. My Goldenrod Yellow bird needed a few drops of touchup, and the match was close enough that you don't see the spots unless you are really looking for them. The paint supplier didn't charge extra for the color match; the body shop I visited first wanted $35 to do the color match, and they just take the car to the paint supplier for the match!

As for formulation, although the car has an old lacquer finish the paint supplier recommended a PPG urethane touchup with a clear coat. Sounds weird, but it came out great. The two bottles cost $25, and I have enough for several touchups.

Try your local Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes paint store. Tell them you are looking to match PPG 71634 for your car.

There is a store in Toledo - not sure how far from you.

check out this site, I belive they sell the paint also. I liked them because they even have the interior colors and tell you what is painted low gloss or flat.

Has anyone found the PPG base coat clear coat paint codes since this post?

I was going to have a nice part scanned for color match, but forgot too. Now their is not a speck of paint on my car to match.

This is a can of the correct basecoat for 1968 Solar Red. I put a sample of this paint alongside original paint inside my trunk deck lid and it matches perfectly.

Don't be confused by the name on the can, "Matador Red". GM used this shade of red on Chevrolets, Pontiacs, Buicks etc, all with the same color code. Matador red is the Chevrolet name for the color. Go by the color code for the paint.

The local PPG dealer told me a year ago that they could get lacquer special order if I bought a gallon minimum. They don't stock lacquer in the stores anymore.

This color is also available in single stage urethane called Concept DCC.

Your paint vendor may also locate this color in the paint charts under the number 71634 Solar Red.

Be sure to do a spray out to be sure the match is correct.
