I'm installing SSBC rear disc conversion kit on my 68 - I can't quite figure out how the parking brake cables work or how they should be routed. If anyone has been through this and has some tips or pics, I would appreciate it.
- The passenger side is supposed to use factory cable with an L-bracket - I can't figure out how that could possibly work. - They send a replacement cable for driver side - that seems like it could work - but I'm not sure how to route it under the axle - by the shock etc.
just a heads up...several guys discussed the SSBC brakes on the L list a couple of years ago....mainly the problem they had...hopefully its been resolved..think it was a master cylinder probelem...they ended up with less brakes than before. There even was a guy from SSBC on the list there for awhile trying to help solve the problem....I never saw a resolution ,but I think there was one...if you get no reply here ,you might try signing up for the email list and ask.
This is a common issue with most all rear disc brake conversion kits on most all cars not just FGF. I am about to attempt one on my LeMans and have been warned of the same problem. In fact, with some kits on some cars, you are not able to even use them (E-brake cables) at all because they simply will not fit etc...
I found out the hard way that some rear disc kits are not designed for the staggered rear shocks on the 68-69's. The calipers need to be top-back on the pasenger side and top front on the drivers side. I did not notice this and had my calipers coated and non-returnable before I did. I ended up having to change my rear shock locations to make it work. with both calipers at the back, routing the parking brake cables was easy though. One small benefit for the hundred hours of work it took to change the shock location.
It was a lot of work. I have the whole saga described on my web page if you are interested. I am pleased with the way it looks but can't comment on how well it works until I get to drive the car (hopefully this summer) Rear suspension Work
Thanks guys.... medhat - great writeup - That sure does look like a lot of work.
I did work out something that seems like it will work. It doesn't match the SSBC instructions and I'm going to need a shorter equalizer cable, but seems like it should stop the car.
WoW... thats a lot of work. Holy crap.. Its looks good, and its amazing how one thing flows into the next, into the next, into the next...till eventually youre done. But Kudos to you for doing all that work. Very impressive...!
that is a good way of describing it all right. One thing flows into the next and the next and the next... exactly. I hope I don't have to many of those chain reactions left in my build. Thanks for the kind words everybody. DIY has always been my primary goal. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. Have brought the front sheet metal back in from the shed after 3 years... :-)
