I have a full and a 3/4 tray and will probably install a scraper when The motor eventually goes together. I'm not sure which tray would be better. It's a 400 and will be around 400-430hp(hopefully) when done. Seems like I heard something about the 3/4 tray being better. Not sure why. Maybe just because the full ones tend to crack around the bolt holes? The pan has a horizontal baffle(stock pan). Not sure what motor it came from. Any comments?
The full length windage tray is one of the best additions you can make to a Pontiac V-8. Adding one will help control oiling, and add a few horses. Reduces oil drag against the crank. Banshee's idea of adding holes to aid the return of oil to the pan makes sense to me.
I'm setting the car up for auto-X and so I'm thinking there will be a lot of oil sloshing around in the pan so anything I can do to reduce the amount of fluid hanging on the crank will help. They say the scraper keeps the crank from spinning thru a mist of oil in the pan that increases resistance to rotation. 1 or 2hp, probably not worth messing with. Scraper's out. Gonna have to think some more on the tray size debate. Drilling extra drain holes sounds like a good idea either way.
Can you run a stock/cruiser without a windage tray?
Mine has came loose and looks like I will be removing (or replacing) it next weekend. So do go without one or purchase an aftermarket one? If I need to install another tray what is the best way to secure the bolts so it does not come loose again?
I sure hope that is what I’m hearing rattling around in my oil pan. Sound like loose bolts shaking around in the pan. THAT CANT BE GOOD Any way to cheek for a loose windage tray before a pull the motor?
