So, as you all know, March Second (Today for most of you) is Dr. Seuss' birthday. In honor of this great event, I volunteered to bake Birthday cupcakes yesterday for my daughter's 3rd grade class. There's 30 of them, so I knew I was going to get dirty.
After the fire department left, I spent about three hours cleaning up the kitchen, which my wife and I are continuing with now ...
So here's what happened:
I flipped on the oven to preheat it to 375. I know my oven's not quite on-kilter, so I set it for 450, thinking that it would come up to temperature faster. Then I sat down here to check in on you guys and discuss the hockey game and Wayne Gretzky's first pro team. (By the way, my mom was Ty Gretzky's 3rd grade teacher a few years ago. Dave Taylor's kids were also students of hers.)
Anyway ... after about 20 minutes, I smelled smoke, looked in the kitchen and D A M N the oven was belching black smoke like a brand-new Mopar! Like a dumb a$s, I threw the oven door open to see what the heck was going on and this great big fireball erupted like you wouldn't believe. I had been smart enough to step to the side before opening the door (I've lost my eyebrows once - I wasn't risking them again!).
Long story short, I'm making checklists tonight. First on my list, in bold letters, is to check the date codes on ALL of the extinguishers when I move into a new house. We've been in this particular house for about 8 years and the darn thing was certified 11 years ago. It was about as useful as ... well, fill in your own blanks.
Anyway, I'm a putting a little levity on it tonight because I'm so relieved that it didn't end in tragedy.
Moral of the story: If you store Tupperware in the oven, make sure that it's melting temperature and flash point is below the pre-heat temperature of cupcakes.
LOL, man, glad that ended well, without damage to your hosue or (more important) without anybody getting hurt.
My oven refuses to pre-heat without opening the door first to check if it is empty. It reads:"Open Door", then after you open & close it it starts pre-heating. Safety feature, now I know why...

Wow, glad it wasn't any worse. Been there, done that as well. Who the hell "stores" anything in the oven? Wives do! I blamed her then she blamed me because the kitchen "doesn't have enough cabinet space". We just can't win...
Never, ever store anything in the oven. I won't let the wife store anything in it, even if it's oven safe like cookie sheets. We all forget to open and look before turning it on.
I've heard of a lot of house fires started by Pizza boxes left in ovens.
Glad everythings ok though, close call.
Did you get the cupcakes done?

Wanting a Custom fit in an off the rack world.
I don't have time for a job, I just need the money.

Been there, done that. I guess I should be more embarrassed since I was already aware that she kept the plastic stuff in there.

Yeah, that was a very close call. We had to trash the oven. It's now laying in the backyard, courtesy of the LAFD demo division. The intensity of the fire shattered the tempered glass of the window, but the darn thing was so well insulated that the walls of the cabinet in the kitchen are virtually unscathed. I can't say as much for the cabinet above the oven. I'm just really glad that I store the important stuff in the cabinet over the fridge!
I bought the cupcakes from the local supermarket. And the kids had a pretty great story to tell their classmates!
Coasting? Sounds like something we all should know about!
It was posted in a thread a few years back. I took Bjorn up through one of my favorite local canyons in the GTO. My Goat was on fumes, but I thought I had enough gas to make the run, so I skipped the gas station. Uphill went great, but downhill ... not so much. I had to coast the beast back to the garage. I know I'll never live it down!

Do tell!!! This obviously has now become a cooking session on the FGF board!

LOL, I thought EVERYBODY knew that one!
It was a great ride though...esp uphill....loved the cruising.....the coasting was fine too, it was just that my wife was waiting at the hotel,as we were flying out shortly there after...but Q got me back 'just in time'! LOL
ok ,if we`re talking cooking now , maybe I should bring out my Beef Bourgignon and Pork Marsala recipes!? lol
Wow, get busy for a few days with out checking in and see what happens? Glad everything is ok... rough way for Patty to get a New Oven! Yikes! I'll make sure Heather does NOT read this one...
I at least hope Tohcan's Oven story relates to baking Powdercoated Parts in the oven?
Sorry to hear that, but after all is said and done, glad you shared it with us... Lol...
Lucky it didn't happen in chicago, you would have had two doors axed and kicked in, all the windows of the frist floor would have be broken out, along with all the water 3 fire hose can spray.
My incident wasn't much, just some mildly melted plastic but might have alerted Q to the possibility.
One of my favourite cupcake projects was many years ago, for a friendly male-only baking competition. I had the bright idea of making chocolate macaroon cupcakes with the appropriate Bundt cake mix (cheating again). I was a little surprised to find that the whole cake mix only filled one muffin pan (six-holer) and even more surprised at the size of the cupcakes after baking!
So how did we do? My best friend was helping me and suggested that we do a quality check. As things turned out, we felt compelled to be thorough - and ate them all ourselves! Deeelicious!
Q, I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time but I was rolling reading it over here.
The last thing that I baked was a pair of exhaust manifolds about 10 years ago. I'm still not allowed to touch the oven. That stink lasted for weeks. I don't even think they were done when I took them out.
I must admit, I turned the oven on tonight and walked down the hall to the office, turned around and double checked the oven to make sure there was nothing left in it! Then looked over my shoulder to make sure no one was watching...
