I need to buy a new fuel pump for my 67 Firebird , the old pump had either a vent or return line in it. During restoration I put a new tank unit in it and it only has the feed line. My question is does anybody know if I can buy the 67 pump and plug the small line or what application used only one line so I can purchase that one?
The return line coming from the pump isn't a vent for the tank. It connects to the sending unit assembly on the top of the gas tank. If you used the same sending unit you had before the tank change you should still have the tube to connect the return line to. You can buy a pump for a 350 car(w/o ac). It doesn't have the return line but it may not be big enough to feed your 400. Depends on how you drive.
It wouldn't on mine. Every car is different but that was my experience. I went electric. Problem solved. Ive heard some people plug the return port coming out of the mech pump but some say it's dangerous if the diaphram were to break and fill the crankcase with gas. Might be an urban legend. Never heard of it happening. Not sure it's worth the risk when there are better options.
If you still have the dual fuel lines in place under the car, you could consider dropping the tank and putting in the dual line fuel sending unit. Rick's Camaros sells them.
I have also found a site that sells aftermarket high volume mechanical fuel pumps for Pontiacs that come with or without the vent line nipple.
