I have searched on the site and can not find it but i know it has been talked about. I have a 69 converting from auto to T10 what are the measurments for the cutout on the tunnel. Thanks Michael
when I converted mine, I mounted the 4-spd to the bell housing with the shifter installed (with out the shift lever). Then from underneath I marked where the opening would have to be. I removed the tranny, drilled the corners of the marked opening and cut it out from the top. Worked well. I did have to enlarge it a little after final assembly. For ease of installation I did not have the clutch installed the first time I set the tranny in. Good luck and enjoy that 4-speed.
That is good advise, however, you could in fact put the clutch in and everything and just leave the shifter off as suggested as you would have to install the shifter after installing the trans. even if the hole was already there. The mark the hole as suggested, cut it out (place a towel over the trans.), drop the shifter down through the hole, put the bolts in place and bingo. Go for a ride!
Good luck buddy! I too am about to do the same with the LeMans. Auto to manual conversion. Looks to be about the same exact project overall it's just that I know the FGF oh so much better from owning a 68 "f" body for 16 years. These "A" bodies are a bit different and have their own issues. LOL
Yes I did read where the hole is on the side and I do have a brand new 4-speed console for it as well. However, I was under the impression that if you were using a console you do not use the pice that you have shown above, that would be for a non-console 4-speed application. Also, my friend right near me has a 67 GTO all original 4-speed car w/console, so I will look his over closely before I begin...
Hmm, where did you get it from? Plus it was my understanding that the shifter bucket went right down to the floor itself and I have the rubber boot that seals up inside the bucket. Will the piece you posted a pic of work with a console and would it allow the shifter bucket to sit down all the way?
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the piece that works with the console is the Chevy part that you can get from NPD (C-12979-100B). Should be the same since it's a Fisher body part and not a Chevy- or Pontiac-specific body part.
I'm more familiar with the '68-'72 A-body, but I am reasonably sure the design is similar from '64-onward for all GM A-Bodies. (There's a break in the P/N between 64-'67 and '68-72.)
