After removing the black handle on my 68, how do you remove the chrome "T" handle off of the shifter shaft? I can't remove my console without pulling this off - can't figure it out.
It looks like there was a set screw in there holding the T Handle to the shaft, but that is missing, so I'm not sure what is holding it on.
There is a Allen screw on the uderside of the chrome handle that needs to be loosened to remove, I have a T-handle lying around if you need one on down the line.
Is the allen screw on the right side of the handle if you are sitting in the car looking at it? I thought that was an allen screw, but I can't get any of mine to work in it. It may be stripped. Is there anything else I can try to get it out?
They make a tool to remove stripped allen heads. It looks like a tapered allen wrench. You could also use an "easy out". Another way to fix it is to drill it slightly bigger and tap it for a larger set screw. Jim
I had mine off about a month ago and I'm pretty sure it is on the right (passenger) side of the handle. It takes a very small allen wrench as Steve mentioned. If yours is stripped out you may be able to use a small EZ out to loosen it or in worse case you may have to drill it Good luck.
it's a reverse threaded tool, it looks kind of like a tapered twist drill but without a cutting edge. It's usually used to remove broken bolts after drilling the centers. They come in a lot of different sizes. Since the screw you need to remove is small, you won't be drilling it out, just turn the easy out into the Allen recess (turning counterclockwise) with your fingers until it's snug, then use a tap wrrench to turn it out, also counterclockwise. The screw should back out with it. If it slips, try the next size larger. Be careful not to snap off the easy-out.
