Yep, its official, me and my father are going off the deep end. We are looking at buying yet another firebird. atm we have a sprint 67 thats being torn down. so we are looking at a big V8 (400) for our second one.
We have not gone to look closley at it yet, but we are told its had the floors and rockers repaired, its about 80% away from being ready for paint.
He does not know what was in the car origanaly, nor if the hood is origianl or a replacment. It has 350 written where the 400 emblem should be. Some weird canadian quirk? He does know it used to be a 4 speed but now its an automatic. He does not know what engine is in the car now, he knows its not a pontiac or chevy engine. he does know that it is a 350 just not the make. Its a wide engine, thats about all he knows about it. And no PHS yet.
He claims it can be driven home.
It boils down to its a non numbers running car. If the metal is repiared well and in decent shape, what do you guys think it would be worth?

If you mean "as it sits now" - maybe 3k - 4k.
Re-done nicely and complete, $12k - $15k.
$7500 way too much as a starting point.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I feel like I am diagonally parked in a parallel universe. 1968 400 convertible (Scarlet) 1976 T/A - 455 LE (No Burt) 1976 T/A New baby, starting full restoration. 1968 350 - 4 speed 'vert - 400 clone (the Beast!) 1968 350 convertible - Wife's car now- 400 clone (Aleutian Blue) (Blue Angel) 2008 Durango - DD 2008 GXP - New one from NH is AWESOME! 2017 Durango Citadel - Modern is nice! HEMI is amazing! 1998 Silverado Z71 - Father-daughter project 1968 400 coupe - R/A clone (Blue Pearl) (sold) 1967 326 convertible - Sold 1980 T/A SE Bandit - Sold
As an aside, though, there appear to be all the right components for a real 400 car, down to the hockey sticks and the bumper emblem. I would guess that the 350 badges on the hood are some tongue-in-cheek attempt at humour.
Have the owner check the trim tag. The hood tach and 400 options are defined on the trim tag.
Me and my father dont like to share, we each need a car. So i wont be resaling it. I am going to go look at it this week hopefully and get a better idea of the condition.
That would be a neat find, an actual 4 speed 400 car.
Thanks for your guy's thoughts, i want to get it at a fair price.
$3500 sounds like a decent (but not great) deal to me. Myself I like a non-original car as it is a blank canvas - you can do whatever you want without feeling like you are destroying history.
Well, we went and took a good look at it. here is the update for those of you eagerly waiting.
Been garaged 100% of its life so it has surprisingly little rust. He has only had it for a few months. Unfortunately, its been in the ditch at least once. Its passenger side sub frame has been heavily impacted by what appears to be a snow/ice bank. Might be fixable, but will take a bit of work. The body was slightly tweaked in that area as well, but thats an easy fix.
The body itself was pretty straight, with a sunroof that looked decent. Pretty sure it was professionally installed as it looks like a good fit inside and out.
The engine and transmission from this car are the real horrors. It is indeed a olds 350 with a 3 speed auto installed. Even has a custom made drive shaft for it. Block casting number 5549643A, i could not find alot of info on that engine.
The car has sat garaged for 14 years. The engine started right up and even broke the tires loose at 45 Mph.
After driving this hurting car i am very much looking forward to getting mine on the road.... even untouched for 14 years its still a blast to drive.
The engine and tranny where the deal killers here (none pantiac). The rest of the car is in overall not bad shape and is fixable within a reasonable amount of time.
