The gasket set for my 400 came with rope seals. Did this motor come originally with rope seals in '69? If so, are there any neoprene seals currently available for this motor? I have heard that rope seals are difficult to install and I would much rather have a neoprene seal. Any help would be appreciated.
The B-O-P seal is available from Spotts, Pontiac Dude and many others. It is the best. One more thing to make sure about: The PCV valve MUST be working for the seal to be effective, otherwise the pressure in the crankcase will push oil past the seal.
Helpful tip: When sizing the seal PER THE INSTRUCTIONS (right-o, Steve) use the rear cap to hold it while you file it. This will make perfect sense while you're doing it.
From what I have heard - you don't want to use the rope seal for any Pontiac motor. Unless you like leaks from your fresh engine.
Original rope seals used asbestos, modern ones use fiberglass and they just do not work. Get the Vitron seal from BOP.
