If I recall, the 428s in '68 were in the Grand Prix and optional in most the other "big" cars; Bonneville, Catalina, Ventura, etc. but not available in the Lemans/GTO or Firebird.
Rumor has it Royal Pontiac did the "Bobcat" treatment to some Firebirds and swapped in 428's.

Just curious, why is there hood emblems out there that are 428 and 455? Is that just for guys who swap out their motors and drop those beasts in,goat hoods or do these repop makers know something that we don't? Not exactly on topic but not too far off topic

They are also being reproduced to fit in the Firebird's mounting holes. These are aftermarket reproducitons, and they DO know that a lot of us are putting bigger-than-factory displacement motors in our birds.
Back in the 80's I bought 428 emblems for 69 Firebird. They were almost an inch thick and looked ridiculous on the hood. I ended up putting one on my air cleaner. Jim
