Would like some advice about an issue my son has with his G6 GT Pontiac.
He recently bought a 2005 G6 GT and the seat is terribly uncomfortable for his bad neck and back. No adjustments of the multi-position power (leather) or manual lumbar and recline or additional seat cushions seem to help.
He has considered having an upholsterer rebuild the shape but he is afraid that might not work after spending a lot to do it.
He is comfortable in my '07 GP GXP bucket and his old '99 Camaro bucket but there is just something messed up in G6 seating.
Can seats, like the GP with a different frame rail width work if we got one from a salvage yard? Are there other replacement seat solutions? Do we need to worry about the car recognizing the disconnected airbag?
As a last resort, he is already looking at cars so he can dump the G6.
Not sure about interchangeability, but I do know you will have a yellow airbag or SRS light screaming at you on the dash if the seats have the side airbag connectors disconnected. This may disable the complete system as well, not sure how pontiac srs module handles one or more airbags being disable. There is also a passenger occupancy sensor in right seat that detects weight.
Not a good idea to swap out or even try to reupholster in my opinion. Safety first!
Thanks all for the comments. When I took Wouter's advice this morning, the dealer pretty much repeated what Jeff said although Jeffs wise advice about safety came across by the dealer almost like I had a disease as their body language was a backing away with "we wouldn't touch something like that". They too thought that the entire airbag system might be disabled without the side one connected and the warning light would be there all the time. It looks like a seat swap is not desirable.
John, We are still looking at covers and cushions to try but the basic G6 seat shape is just bad for my son. Most covers just add even thickness but the upper back and shoulder support is still not there.
Sadly, he likes the car and it is in great shape but he may have to sell it and find something else.
Yes we have looked at those and tried a version of the more-full seatback type. The lumbar support type are the opposite problem. The G6 is quite firm in the lumbar and bottom half of the seat then is mushy and caves in in the upper half, thus no upper back and shoulder support. (The car also has adjustable lumbar and he has it all the way in.)
When I push on my GP GXP seat, the top half of the seat is quite firm and supportive. I then push in on his G6 seat and the top mushes in but the bottom doesn't.
I drove the car this past weekend and noticed the seat is wrong. I was not terribly uncomfortable but I sure wouldn't want to drive on a long trip in it.

Whenver I bring my GP in for service, they always give me a G6 rental. I have posted here a few times about how uncomfortable those cars are. I also noticed how cheap the trim was and how bad the doors rattled when you slammed them.
His best choice may be to dump the G6 and buy a GP. There are a ton of those out there to buy. Although low mileage ones are getting really hard to find. I am still baffled why Pontiac dropped the Prix line in '08. (I guess it doesn't matter now that Pontiac itself is gone) I'd like to stock up three or four '08 GXP's for future use...
