I'm liking the new engine , but now I need to figure out how to get the th400 to shift later. It shifts from 1st to 2nd way too soon. I've read a little about installing a shift kit but no more than that. Would this make a big improvement and all I need or is a shift kit just part of a performance upgrade? Also, is this an easy install? Thanks!
I used the B&M kit. All you have to do is remove the valve body. I set mine up manual reverse. [censored] thing shifted late and hard on a loose converter. I had to remove and not set it up so hot.
Took a few hours.

I installed a Superior shift kit in my 400. I was not to difficult to install but I do not have the car on the road to know how it feels. I bought the kit from a friend who works at a transmission shop. He said this is a very good kit. I think you need to work on the govenor to change the shift points.
I did the B&M shift kit with "Stage 2" and removed the accumulator piston spring. It doesn't have much effect with a weak/mild engine but I am hoping my fresh engine makes it more effective.
Check your vacuum modulator and vacuum line for leaks.

Well my 67 has a manual shift kit and I hate it... It will not shift on it's own is my problem with it. Previous owner installed it when the trans. was rebuilt. The 2 lower gears are geared too low and drive isn't much better. COuld be the rearend. Haven't had it up to check the ratio but was told it was a 3.23 limited slip. So that shouldn't be the problem. I think if I found a 400 bop turbo and file 13 the uni350 turbo I'd probably be happy.
Doug there should be a screw in your vaccum reg. on the tranny. Take your vaccum line off and you'll see a screw with a flathead slot that will adjust the vaccum to your tranny and change when it shifts.
Thanks eveyone. I'll start with the vac modulator and see what happens turning that in a little. Reading here and another site it sounds like I should go with a stage 2 B&M shift kit just like Vikki says. Banshee, when you say remove the valve body, do you mean remove to install the shift kit or replace with a new valve body. This may be a stupid question since I've not taken one apart yet and not sure how a shift kit is installed. I hear B&M has a great instructional video that comes with the kit. Should I also be planning to adjust the governor when installing a shift kit? Thanks,
You just drop the pan, pull the filter, pull the vacuum modulator, and the valve body removes easily. You can then change the plate and spring if desired. I took that opportunity to add a finned cast aluminum trans pan for added capacity and cooling.
I did not make any changes to my governor, and the shift points are appropriate for my gear ratio.

I added that B&M shift kit years ago....and on advice by Joe Rothman on L list I removed that s[piring (I think its the one Vikki is talking about), to get a more agressive shift....i just 'slams in' instead of doing a grandma shift...I also added an aluminum finned pan for better cooling and more oil...I think its a TSI pan IRCC
