Hello. 1968 350 with AT. Replaced the alternator, voltage regular and battery, all are now working properly. Hot start problem, starter is 10 years old. Removed starter, brought it to auto parts store, tested fine on machine. Put it back on car, same problem. Do i simply need a new starter as it had cooled by the time i tested it?
In addition to what catalina stated, I would opt for a new starter as well considering this one is 10 year old! I know you can get a stock type starter at AutoZone for $34.99 with a lifetime warranty no less. I had the same one in the Bird for more than 5 years and never a single issue. So for that kind of money and the fact that you already have it out of the car, why not?
Mine has a new Bosch starter, heat sheild, and heavy cables but sometimes if it is a bit hot, it turns over slowly, but always catches and starts quickly.

I occasionally has a slow turn as well with factory starter, cables and heat shield. But only if I have turned it off when it is really hot and try to start it in less than 5 minutes. It always starts though. (knock on simulated burlwood)

I would go with the mini high torque starter. I had a problem with hot starts as well. 1st time replaced with OEM starter. Had the same hot start problem. The new mini starter (Bought from AMES) seems to have cured the problem.
1 gauge cables (both pos and neg, since its a circuit) and a 1000 CA battery. Also, there may be heavy duty versions of stock starters. Ames sells a "high torque" stock type starter for 90 bucks. The local auto parts stores may sell the wimpy version.
I guess I have been lucky all these years with my $30 AutoZone stock starter, heat sheild, LBMs. I NEVER ONCE had a hot start issue the entire 10 years with my bird.
Even now with the 326, it's all stock, drove on the beach today for 7 miles, stop and go, 10mph bumper to bumper in 96* heat. Got to the end of the strip, pulled in and parked on the beach. Got out some cold drinks from the trunk and she fired right back up (knock on simulated walnut (67 LeMans console)...
I recently purchased a remote starter solenoid (spelling?) for under $30. If I ever get a few minutes of time to install, it should work to fix my hot start problems.
