i currently have the standard? rocker panel which is just painted the same as the rest of the car. Its comming pretty close to the time when im gonna be stripping and painting the car so id like to figure out how to put those spiffy looking chrome rocker panels i see many of you guys with. Is it just a thin bolt on piece of chromed metal or is it something a little more involving? if so, could i get some idea of how to put it on/ where to get it from?
yes it is just a screw on piece, the ones i put on anyway. I got them from year one. I dont remember the price of them though. Simple to install, but i just replaced the old ones that were already on the car. I dont know if you will have to drill to put them on or not..
I dont have those, are you talking about the ones that go on the back side of the doors though?? between the door and the 1/4. The trim that i have seen(not for f-birds) is just a push on i think that is what they look like in my catalouges too but am not sure
David, Are you refering to the '68s? I believe the "bright metal" rocker panel moldings were standard on all '68. They mount in three ways. First each molding has two mounting strips that are about 18" long. Those are attached to the rocker with sheet metal screws. The molding then "clips" onto those. Second, on each end of the molding there is an "appearance" screw that holds the molding to the rocker. Finally, the molding has tabs on the bottom that wrap somewhat around the rocker and are secured by hex head sheetmetal screws to rocker. You can see a picture of those mouting strips at the bottom of this page: http://www.geocities.com/jims68fb/RockerDrain.html
I believe I have seen most of the big Firebird parts vendors selling the moldings and maybe the mounting strips.
The door edge guards are easily added by drilling (I believe) three small holes.

Just checking as I recently saw a 69 with the chrome molding at the top just for something different I guess. The original door edge chrome had 3 philips screws, new replacements are push on. I see in the Ames catalog p.55 that LH side are discontinued for 67-68.
