HI GUY'S I'M HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE WATER PUMP ON MY 68 FIREBIRD IT OVER HEATS.IT'S A NEW PUMP THE WATER PUMP PUMPS WATER DOWN THRU THE BOTTOM OF THE RADIATOR.. IS THIS THE WAY IT SHOULD GO? MY ENGINE CODE IS XV. THE ROTOR BUTTON TURNS COUNTER CLOCKWISE WHILE THE CRANK TURNS CLOCKWISE. IT HAS AN 8 BOLT WATER PUMP ON IT AND THE FINS TURN THE WATER DOWN THRU THE BOTTOM HOSE. EVERYONE I KNOW SAYS IT SHOULD GO THRU THE TOP HOSE AND OUT THRU THE CORES AND BE SUCKED UP THRU THE BOTTOM.. ANY ONE HAVE CASTING# FOR THE WATER PUMP FOR THAT YEAR.. IT SEEMS AS IF THE WATER PUMP IS WORKING BACKWARDS. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.. THANKS RON...
for casting # try 1968firebird.org there is a fairly complete illustrations manual, parts manual, and service manual there.
the rotor button turns counterclockwise, engine turns clockwise... yes. normal for these.
coolant flow is from top down.... w/p circulates from radiator to engine at bottom hose. engine provides coolant to radiator thru top hose where the thermosat housing is. all engines i know of circulate from top down thru the radiator. cant really see how it would go the other way, even if it had a reverse impellor on it from a sepentine engine, it still turns clockwise, so i would think it just wouldn't circulate... like if you put a regular pump on a serpentine/reverse engine.
impellor may be rusted, or too far away from divider, or perhaps something else.
Strange. But I looked all over my '67 8-bolt water pump and could not find a casting number.
